In recent years Director, Producer, and Dramaturg Dirk Schattner has presented numerous music theater works as stage director and playwright in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Hungary and Greece.
His musical drama THE LITLLE MATCHGIRL was presented 2011 in Ronacher Theater Vienna. For Theater Akzent in Vienna and Stage Theater Kehrwieder in Hamburg he directed the first German production of the musical A WINTER ROSE IN SUMMER, that, also under his direction, had its world premiere in 2011 in Amsterdam.
Between 2003 and 2007, Schattner directed more than 20 productions of musicals, drama, opera, and operetta for Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar. Highlights during these years were a staged version of Franz Schubert’s DIE SCHÖNE MÜLLERIN, a film version of Franz Schmitt’s oratorio DAS BUCH MIT SIEBEN SIEGELN, Jaques Offenbach’s PARISER LEBEN and Heiner Müller’s BILDBESCHREIBUNG with music by Richard Wagner.
2004 – 2014 Dirk Schattner has worked as leading dramaturg of the International Young Artists Festival Bayreuth, where he presented the 2011 world premiere of his Gustav Mahler Theater work ICH BIN DER WELT ABHANDEN GEKOMMEN.
His works as writer have been played in various theaters in Gelsenkirchen, Weimar, Cologne, Kassel, and Vienna.
For the International Festival of the Aegean in Syros, Greece, he directed the operas SALOME by Richard Strauss (2012) and COSI FAN TUTTE (2013) and worked as acting coach for the Greek Opera Studio; for the program of Culture Capital of Europe RUHR.2010 he produced more than 80 short movies on Puccini’s MANON LESCAUT. Work for the international opera festival in Miskilc, Hungary, included serving as stage director for BLUEBEARD’S CASTLE by Bela Bartok.
In 2013, his text for ANGEL had its world premiere at the Festival for Contemporary Music in Lüneburg and Hamburg. Additonally, he created a Giuseppe-Verdi-Operagala (a movie on Verdi- opera-characters), and the dramatic staging of DIE SRAZENIN on a text by Richard Wagner.
Projects for 2014 included the preparation of a new rock opera on Franz Kafka’s THE CASTLE and a production of Verdi’s RIGOLETTO as 150-year-anniversary-production of Apollo Theater Syros.
Dirk Schattner made his USA debut as stage director with Belcantanti Opera in Washington, D.C., Co-directing E. Kalmans operetta DIE CSARDASFURSTIN. His theater version and song texts to Joseph Roth’s novel HIOB premiered in Cologne and Berlin in February 2015. In May 2015 he directed a revival of ICH BIN DER WELT ABHANDEN GEKOMMEN with Belcantanti Opera, in summer 2015 Luigi Cherubinis MEDEA on Syros. Upcoming projects are a production of Mozarts ENTFUHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL in New Jersey, GREEN LINE, a theater fantasy in Manhattan, a staged version of Schubert’s WINTERREISE, a new music theater about the life of Friedelind Wagner and a musical version of Shakespeares MACBETH.
